Fashion Interning 6 Months On

Saturday, 28 January 2017

I've been interning in Fashion since June 2016, so that would be 8 months. I decided to take a placement year as part of my university course, so I have to complete 48 weeks, however I think I'll probably end up doing a few more than that. I've written a few posts about interning before, and they're been quite well received so I'll pop them here (Top Tips for Interning, Making the Most of Working Abroad and Interning So Far) For today's post I'd like to talk a little bit more about what I've learnt in the 6 months I've been interning at Charlotte Mills (a luxury bridal footwear brand) and why I think it's beneficial to do a longer internship as well as shorter ones.

What I've learnt

1. I've become so much more confident with my writing, I was always just average at English in school, so my writing is something I've always been slightly self conscious about. Especially when it came to my blog. But spending almost every working day on my laptop, writing emails, press releases, newsletters etc. It comes more naturally to me now. I do still sometimes get a bit carried away and my grammar will probably never be perfect, but I do feel myself improving.

2. I've learnt so much more about shoes. I know that this is something that I've learnt because I'm currently interning for a bridal shoe designer, but honestly the amount of work and how many pieces it takes to make a pair of shoes. It's something that you don't really think about until you see it.

3. Always have a note pad handy. I have a planner on my desk that is such a lifesaver. I plan out all the things I have to do get done in that day, but if we're brainstorming or someone suddenly thinks of something that needs doing then I have a separate notebook for that. Just to make rough notes, or roughly plan out a Press Release or Newsletter.

4. Not too 'toot my own horn' as the saying goes but I am now the queen of scheduling social media. I haven't quite managed to translate that to my blog quite yet but give me time haha! I've looked over all our accounts and worked out what works for us. What times are best to post, how often to post a day etc. Hootsuite has been a complete lifesaver.

5. I love my job. I love that every day is different. I love that today I spent the morning finishing off a press pack, then we had a 2 hour lunch meeting where we popped open a bottle of bubbly for meeting this months target early then we spent the last 2 hours planning and arranging how the shoes are going to be displayed for LFW. I love that tomorrow my day will be completely different. This keeps me on my toes, always excited and ready to put in 110%. I've learnt that if you love what you're doing it's so much easier to do it well. Since working at Charlotte Mills I've learnt what elements of my job I'd like to pursue after university and what sort of job's I'd like to gain more experience in.

Interning in general is a complete learning experience, I've had placements I've not enjoyed, I've worked 11 hours days dressing models and I've done a variety of things at Charlotte Mills. I'm thinking of doing a whole blog post about a short term placement vs a longer place, but the main point I want to make is that you're given more responsibility and you're trusted with more things when doing a longer placement. As time goes on things will get delegated to you and you'll take on more tasks. So you'll learn more than you would if you were just doing a week long placement, because they'll trust you to get the tasks done.

Are you wanting to get your foot in the door and start a career in fashion? If you're thinking of interning or you're currently interning I'd love to hear!

With Love; Em x

    1. Aw thanks Jessie! I'm loving reading your internship posts! I totally agree! xxxx

  2. Even though I don't plan on working in fashion nor carrying out an internship, I really loved reading this post and found it really interesting. I definitely think this will be a great for anyone wanting to go into either of those things x
