10 Things I've Learnt in 2016

Tuesday, 27 December 2016

I wanted to sit down and write about something a little different today, 2016 has been such a mad year for me. So much has changed over the past 12 months so I thought I'd talk you through some lessons I've learnt in 2016.

1. Say Yes.
Obviously this depends on the situation, but so many things about this year were so daunting. Starting a placement year and finding internships. I got offered an internship over summer, 4 weeks in london and paris. I received the email on the Thursday evening, went for an interview on the Friday and started on the Monday. Normally I would have said no to that oppurnity because of the cost of interning in london, and moving and travelling on my own is so out of my comfort zone, but I feel so much more confident and I gained so much from that experience.

2. Put the effort in and you will get rewarded.
I like to think I've always worked hard with school, sure there were some subject's I tried a lot harder in that others.. (lets not think about that D in Spanish..) but last year at uni I worked my absolute butt off, I couldn't have done anymore. And to be rewarded with a 1st makes it all worth it. All the late nights paid off.

3. Living Alone is actually quite nice.
I quite like my own company, and living on my own has actually been great. I wrote a blog post about it here. It's something I'd recommend everyone to do at least once in their life.

4. Find Out Who Matters
When you live on your own, in a different city to your friends and family it shows you just who matters. Who will make the effort to stay in touch and they're the people to hold on too.

5. You are what you eat.
I break out like mad when I spend a weekend drinking wine and eating chocolate. But it's something I really enjoy. I know that I have more energy when I drink lots of water and have smoothies or porridge for breakfast, but I'm not perfect and it's something I think I'll struggle with for a while. My point is know what you should be eating and if you mess up it's okay just try again the next day.

6. Push yourself.
I was so proud that I managed to blog everyday in August. I was shocked that I completed it to be honest, and although my posts haven't been as frequent since then to be able to look back and know I worked my butt off posting every day in August makes me so happy and gives me the motivation to do it again.

7. Work through the tough times.
Whether thats working hard at an internship you don't like, or whether it's figuring out some problems with family or relationships. Work through it, don't give up and you'll feel so much better afterwards. I worked hard at an internship that I really hated and now I'm working even harder at an internship that I love!

8. Use up some of the products you've got lying around.
I think I've got about 9 bottles of moisturiser in my draws. Same with eyeshadow palettes and other bits and bobs. Instead of purchasing the latest releases use up what I've got instead.

9. It's the little things that count.
Whether it's Josh coming round for an extra night or coming home just for a night, it's the little things that make all the difference. And this year I've really learnt to appreciate things while your in the moment.

10. 2017 is a New Year.
Although 2016 has been pretty decent for me, I've been to Amsterdam (read my travel guide here), I started my placement year, worked in Paris for a week, celebrated mine and josh's 2 year anniversary (read the soppy post here). It's been pretty shocking in terms of big changes such as the England leaving the UK and Trump being president elect and so many celebrities having left us. So lets just remember that 2017 is a new year, and we can all make it what we want it to be!

This will be last post of 2016, so I hope you've all had the loveliest christmas! And I'll speak to you all again next year..

With Love;
Em x
